WE HAVE 3 WAYS TO SHARE OUR TECHNIQUE WITH OTHERS 1. OUR PROCEDURES MANUAL 2. THE TWO DAY WORKSHOPS 3. THE ONE DAY WORKSHOPS WE ARE PRESENTLY WORKING ON A ZOOM CLASS AS WELL
1. OUR PROCEDURES MANUAL
The Procedures Manual on Flame Painting Copper is a great way to get started in this unique art form. It comes with an Equipment, Tools and Materials list that we have compiled over the years, which includes where to find your set up for flame painting. The Manual shares 61 years of combined experience in flame painting from Skip and I and over 12 years of teaching this medium as well. The Manual comes with
our story here at Copper Colorists
what flame painting really is
the procedures for drawing and painting copper with a flame
a long version with much detail
instructional guides to set up on your work space as you practice
info on how to keep the colors after adding the clear coat
an equipment, tools and materials list
It also includes illustrations for the two flames needed to draw and paint, the positions of the torch for soldering, drawing and coloring, and of course color charts for the ground colors and the reduction colors. There are tips for adjusting your flame for each procedure, and a list of the rules for getting the best colors. You will be able to watch our video from our website to gain understanding as well.
If you would like to order the Manual:
The Procedures Manual is $39 plus $4 for shipping and handling.

2. THE TWO DAY WORKSHOPS Currently we offer a two day workshop on March 13-14, 2024. This workshop takes place where we have our studio/shop at the Ozark Folk Center's Craft Village in Mountain View, AR and takes place during their Folk School Spring Classes each year. *Note: A Two Day workshop can also be scheduled for any two days of the year that will work for you, Skip and Racheal. Just email Racheal at coppercolorists@msn.com with your request and she will work with you to find the dates that will work.
The following is all the information you need for this workshop:
PREREQUISITES Instructor approval is required to take this workshop. We have found that people with certain physical handicaps and eye problems will not succeed. And it is most important that you know how to solder with a TORCH, as you will be making your own pieces to flame paint and we won't have time to teach soldering in depth in this workshop. We will only be teaching some basic skills in soldering in this two day workshop. So please email Racheal at coppercolorists@msn.com to get approval and make arrangements for this workshop.
Note: We do offer a one day, one-on-one soldering workshop in our studio that would be helpful for in depth instruction. Just email us to ask us about our soldering workshop.
DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP During this workshop you will learn our basic techniques and procedures for creating shapes, patterns and colors on copper with a torch. You’ll also learn the best ways to get, seal and keep those colors. This workshop is also great for those who already know how to flame paint and would like us to take them to the next level.
By the end of the course, you will complete several flame colored projects. We encourage all students to purchase our Procedures Manual and equipment list from our online store, preferably before the class starts. This, along with what you will be taught in class, will enable you to set up your own home studio and begin building skills in this wonderful medium.
Note that although this process is exciting to learn, this is not an easy art form to control. It usually takes several years of practice to begin getting the patterns and colors one is aiming for. So, this is not for your everyday hobbyist, but for those who are more “serious” about learning this art form. Please email Racheal to make sure this workshop is right for you.
TOOLS These are the tools that are essentioal for working copper and you canbring any of these to the three day workshop, although we will have them here for each student as well:
Long nose plier

Flat nose plier
Ball Peen Hammer
Vice Grip for holding your piece while heating - the Huskey at Lowe's
COSTS
$400 is the cost for the teaching and is due to Skip and Racheal at the beginning of class. They accept; cash and major credit card.
$40 is the registration fee due to the Ozark Folk Center. You can pay your registration fee right before the beginning of the class.
$35 is the materials fee (which does not include the manual) and it covers materials used in the workshop and my labor in making all but one of the pieces we will flame paint. This fee is also due at the beginning of the workshop.
$475 then is the TOTAL COST.
*Minimum number of students is 1 and maximum is 2 for the two day workshop.
*Note: The Two Day workshop can also be scheduled for any two days of the year that will work for you, Skip and Racheal.
REGISTRATION Email Racheal at coppercolorists@msn.com to get approval for the Folk School Spring Class on Flame Painting Copper on March 13-14, 2024 by explaining your soldering experience and any handicaps in detail. After approval, Racheal will put you on the schedule of their workshops, and when you come for the workshop, you are to register at the front desk ($20 per day for registration fee equals $40 for this 2 day workshop).
Note: After approval, you can call the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, AR at 870-269-3851 to ask them about their Dry Creek Lodge for an economical place to stay in Mountain View.
3. THE ONE DAY INDEPENDENT STUDY WORKSHOPS
Our one day independent study workshop is a great way to start building skills in this medium! You will basically learn the same thing as in the three day workshop explained above except in a shorter time and with one-on-one instruction. Then you get to go home to practice and build skills in flame painting. We encourage students to purchase our Procedures Manual before coming to the class so you can read and even practice some before you start in person instruction. This is a great way to learn this technique.
For those who already have the Procedures Manual and have already begun to build skills for quite a while, this one day workshop is an excellent way to let us take you to the next level in flame painting copper.
PREREQUISITE The prerequisite for this one day workshop is the same as for the three day workshop; you must know how to solder with a TORCH to get approved! If you need instruction in soldering, we can send you to some You Tube video links to help. Or you can add a second day to your one day workshop and we will be able to teach both soldering and flame painting at the same time. The cost for the one day workshop is $250 and for the two day independent study is $450 ($225 per day). Email Racheal at coppercolorists@msn.com to get approval by explaining your soldering experience in detail, and to arrange what day/days to come that will work for all. If you give me your phone number, I can call you back to discuss any of this.

$20 is the registration fee per day.
$250 is the cost for teaching the one day workshop and is due to Skip and Racheal at the beginning of the workshop; cash or major credit card.

When you come for your workshop, you will register and pay for your Independent Study Workshop. The registration fee is $20 per day. The payment for the workshop itself will be due by check or credit card to Copper Colorists.
